"We have early models of Musicam codecs that are used everyday and they are solid and still going strong!"

-- Josh Kubasta
       Minnesota Public Radio

"Do more with less" is shaping up to be the theme of 2010. No one is popping the Krug corks over the economy these days, but instead of grumbling about it, why not embrace it? You might be thinking 'easy for you to say, but try incorporating cost-cutting solutions at our station, when we're told to add programming elements, remotes and sometimes affiliates and see just how fun that is!'

Bingo! This is our fun. At Musicam USA, we've been developing IP solutions since 2000 and have helped thousands of radio and television stations - and groups of stations - around the globe expand their programming horizons and save money with innovative IP solutions.

Mr. Kubasta, quoted above, coordinates 800 remotes every year for his station and its group of affiliates. You may not even break double digits for remotes, but what if you could double the amount of remotes you do and double your revenue? Or what if you and your sister station were covering the same remote and discovered ways to share codecs?

Maximizing IP resources among stations is an untapped spigot of funds saved from thinking outside the box. Sometimes all it takes is a little bud bug in the ear. Here are a few ways we're seeing clients share resources successfully and we wanted to share those solutions with you.

  • STATION SYNERGY: If you have an AM/FM station combo or a TV affiliate, all you need is a shared LAN (or WAN) to make some magic happen. With Musicam USA's Suprima codec acting as the master (on each end), you can share talent for live anchor promos or voice over artists, time-sensitive reporter packages, real-time voice tracking or on-location multicasting. If you're worried about a full transition from ISDN to IP, don't - Suprima has ISDN failover, as well as a few other key characteristics such as:

  • Multi-Unicast ability with up to 10 remote codecs
  • 1 RU fan-cooled rack-mount codec
  • IP/ISDN connectivity (software upgrade via FTP)
  • Supports G.722, MPEG L2/L3, AAC LC, MPEG4 LD, apt-XTM Std & Enh, PCM, and AAC-HE
  • FEC (Forward Error Correction) and 'Error Concealment' to eliminate the impact of packet losses
  • CCS Nat Traversal Streaming Protocol permits router firewall pass-through with zero configuration
  • Remote contact closures
  • SIP compatibility

  • STATION SHARING: If you are an AM/FM station or group of stations, investing in two portable IP RoadWarrior codecs instead of four remote kits could be your answer. RoadWarrior comes in several versions: RoadWarrior, RoadWarrior LC and RoadWarrior XL, which can operate on the 3G network via a USB modem. Another reason you might want to share - as much as engineers and program directors may not be a fan of the concept - is because you can actually have one RoadWarrior at the same location (i.e. press conference, parade, news event, etc.) and two stations piping out of it. Plus you won't have to set up ISDN lines - or pay for them! Here's more on the RoadWarrior XL, our latest model:

  • Configurable and scalable system to optimize link for low delay, jitter, and utilization
  • Built-in four channel mixer
  • 4 Mic/Line inputs & 1 line input and 4 headphone outputs
  • Full control (local & remote) of audio levels & I/O signal routing, using cross-point audio matrix
  • IP, 3G/3.5G (optional), PSTN and ISDN (optional) communications
  • ISDN failover option
  • FEC (Forward Error Correction) and 'Error Concealment' to eliminate the impact of packet losses
  • CCS NAT Transversal Streaming Protocol permits router firewall pass-through with zero configuration
  • Optional battery with charge and status indications
  • User profiles for different talent operation
  • Meets all initial standards for IP compatibility of the EBU group: SIP/SAP/SDP/RTP

  • LINK LEAP: Make the STL leap to IP with Suprima. Here's how: Using your own LAN, link your base Suprima codec at your station to another at your transmitter. This will not only eliminate recurring monthly phone loop costs, but also ISDN charges. Plus this will offer you more conveniences and flexibility with Suprima technology. You can make use of email alerts as to the status of your STL link and start to think in broader terms of programming with our portable RoadWarrior codecs and PCip - a portable codec right on your laptop.

At least make a commitment to explore the IP frontier this month, if you haven't already. Musicam USA's products pay for themselves in cost savings. Plus we back every single one of our products with unparalleled technical support to help you get humming on the air - no matter where! That includes helping your reporters and voice-over talent get connected to you via IP. Give us a call at 732-739-5600 to see how easy it is to start saving with IP, upgrade your current equipment or add to your arsenal. You have nothing to lose by weighing your options!

MUSICAM HAPPENINGS...WE PUT THE 'IP' IN 'VIP ACCESS'!!

Musicam USA's IP codecs were broadcasting all the action at Super Bowl 44, when the Saints toppled the Colts on February 7. Our RoadWarriors and Suprimas have also been connecting the world with Vancouver for live play-by-play details at the Winter Olympics. And 1010 WINS Radio in New York will use RoadWarrior to power St. Patty's Day parade details to its audience on March 17.

A special thanks to CBS for expanding their arsenal of RoadWarriors and CBC in Canada for their acquisition of more than 100 Musicam USA Suprima LC and Suprimax units, which will operate solely via IP at their various radio stations.

If you are already a Suprima or RoadWarrior client, don't forget to download the latest software upgrade version 6.1.2 and the release notes. Visit www.musicamusa.com and click on "Support," then click onto either "Suprima Support" and "Suprima Software Upgrades" or "RoadWarrior Support" and "RoadWarrior Software Upgrades." Check out all the latest features such as Forward Error Correction V4 and Error Concealment for MPEG compression algorithms.

We are still upgrading Prima clients to Suprima, which is an easy way to transition to IP (with ISDN backup). If you are a Prima client, call us at 732-739-5600 and we will walk you through every step of the process. It's simple and extremely cost-effective.
