"We used multiple Musicam USA codecs over IP to broadcast live from a cruise ship for the Fourth of July. The RoadWarior XL was easy to set up and I was blown away from the quality! We did not have one glitch or degradation of sound. Musicam USA products are extremely impressive. But don't take my word for it - call them up and ask them to try one!"

-- Mark Allen, a.k.a. "Tictak"
92.3 NOW, New York City

Macy's Fourth of July Spectacular was exactly that this year, with more than 40,000 shells bursting over the Hudson River. Organizers pulled out all the stops to create unforgettable memories for all who were watching from home, listening in their cars and aboard the Norwegian Epic Cruise Ship, docked off the west side of Manhattan.

Both CBS Radio stations, 1010 WINS and 92.3 NOW, held prime positions atop the 15th deck of the massive cruise ship, and piped individual broadcasts to their listeners, thanks to Musicam USA's portable codec, RoadWarrior XL, which was operating over IP. On deck, one Musicam codec provided two separate paths of audio - to 1010 WINS and 92.3 NOW with three on-air hosts and reporters roaming about the ship, interacting with guests.

Sound from the ship was linked via IP (5.8 ghz.) to the Empire State Building, where it was then handed off to the WAN switch, and then decoded back at the studios downtown. The tri-link setup was set up in a mere 25 minutes the day of the remote and the antenna at Empire was established in 20 minutes two days prior to the fireworks. "We received the green light for 92.3 NOW to broadcast the event just a few days before it,"

Allen explains. "We had a few choices:

    1. Satellite, but coordinating that would have been too complex in such a short time-span
    2. POTS lines, but we would have had to install it, and again, time was of the essence
    3. Opt for ISDN, but we didn't have enough lines available

So we decided to use Musicam USA's RoadWarrior XL with a microwave shot to Empire and decoder at the station. The talkback was crystal clear, we had no delay, no dropouts and the audio was fantastic!"

Using a Musicam RoadWarrior XL was what altered Allen's perception of IP. "When you think about IP audio, your knee-jerk reaction might be that the technology has not yet gotten up to speed," Allen noted. "Yet when you hear Musicam USA products and experience what they can do, it is extremely impressive! I went back to the studio and sampled the broadcast on the logger, and it sounded like we were in the studio."

If you're amidst a busy remote season and are looking to ease the burden of cumbersome equipment, hefty ISDN bills and logistics headaches with setting up ISDN lines, now is the time to try an IP codec.

Musicam USA realizes that many engineers are skeptical about the transition from ISDN to IP. That's natural and that's why we've made the RoadWarrior XL with ISDN failover - should something happen to your IP connection, you won't lose a moment of your broadcast. Plus the RoadWarrior XL is compact, easy to set up and able to operate with 3G via a USB modem.
