"The reason why I chose Musicam for Corus - and now Cogeco - is because their flexibility, stability and usability far exceed the competition. We share programming across stations 24/7 and have never have problems with Musicam products."
-- Jocelyn Ruel
Engineering Consultant,
Cogeco, Canada
If you're looking to spread cheer in the New Year, you might want to take a step back and re-think your multicast solution. Are you spending gobs of cash on a land line? Worse, are you forking over small fortunes for a satellite feed to simulcast programming?
|
|
Jocelyn Ruel in 2006 paused to perform this optimization exercise. This was before Corus was taken over by Cogeco in Canada, but his cost-saving solution has been adopted an applauded at Cogeco, where six radio stations hum programming 24/7.
"We have had Musicam codecs since 2006 to connect stations because the land line is pricy and costs around $1,000 a month," explains Ruel. "We can now receive our feed in Quebec and feed it through the Musicam Suprima encoder. We have several units, which are housed in the Suprimax chassis and just ordered 28 more units this past month."
Ruel was seeking an IP solution to avert the lofty phone company costs for his six-station network. Among them, they share several formats, including talk, news and music. He deduced that the combination of Musicam's IP codec Suprima and chassis Suprimax was the right solution because "there is more flexibility and stability compared to the competition. We never have problems with Musicam products and we don't even use the ISDN failover feature because our codecs are only connected to the WAN."
|
|
One of the features he likes best is the ease of connectivity. "We have some equipment in Gastineau and we have guests in Montreal and Quebec. We use the address book on Suprima and have several IP addresses and use the GPI (remote) control access. So we only have to push one button to initiate the call and we close the connection at the end of the reports."
Another feature he loves is Suprima's ultra flexibility with algorithms. "With APTX, we can't have more than three connections," he explains, so they use APT-X for point-to-point programming and MPEG 3 for hosts-to-guest programming.
In addition to flexible features and reliability with connectivity, Ruel is confident that if something does go awry, Musicam's unparalleled customer support is available. "When we had a problem with configuring the equipment, the support from Musicam was wonderful," he notes. "We encountered problems with IE and Larry [Rutzler] and David Pearce from Musicam sent me the updates and it solved the problem."

|
By opting for Suprima and Suprimax, Cogeco has saved oodles of cash. "By purchasing this equipment, we are now able to cancel our land line and the satellite feed. The only equipment we will have is Musicam's - their usability, stability and client service far exceed the competition!"
If your station or group of stations is exploring the leap from a loop to IP, Suprima is an easy starting point. At Musicam USA, all of our codecs speak to one another via the Suprima technology. Plus Suprima supports all algorithms and features ISDN failover. These, among other features below, enable seamless connectivity, technology and interfacing, as well as multicasting domestically or internationally.

At Musicam USA, we recognize every standalone station and conglomerate of stations varies by format, multicasting, number of remotes/year and budget, so we personalize IP solutions for each. The basic Suprima codec supports all algorithms and features automatic ISDN failover to ease your concerns about IP. Check out all that we've jammed into this multifaceted 1-RU IP solution: |
|
Multi-Unicast ability with up to 10 remote codecs
1 RU fan-cooled rack-mount codec
IP/ISDN connectivity (software upgrade via FTP) *
Automatic ISDN failover *
Supports G.722, Mpeg L2/L3, AAC LC, MPEG4 LD, PCM , and AAC-HE
Dolby E transmission over IP (using AES/EBU I/O in transparent mode)
LAN interface 10/100 base-T Ethernet for control and audio transmission

Musicam USA's RoadWarrior was perched next to the towering Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center, NYC, for the Annual Tree Lighting ceremony. The one portable IP codec was used for a two-radio station broadcast.
CCS/Musicam USA would like to extend a warm welcome Swarthmore College in PA, which has joined our family of codec clients, and to Boston University (WBUR), which extended its arsenal of Musicam codecs.
