MUSICAM USA's RoadRunnerÔ His clients are demanding. His schedule is tight. And his budget is even tighter. That's why Wendell Craig, staff announcer at CBS and freelance voice-over talent based in Manhattan has become a self-proclaimed "astute shopper." It's also why he recently purchased a RoadRunner™ codec from MUSICAM USA. After 13 years as the owner of a recording studio, Craig says he buys only essential, top-quality equipment that "pays its way." According to him, the RoadRunner is the "best value," packing mixer, terminal adapter, and codec in one "solid, well-built" unit. "It exceeded my expectations," he says, and his expectations were high. Best of all, it offers excellent audio quality. Completely bi-directional, the RoadRunner provides 15kHz mono on a single ISDN "B" channel and 20 kHz on a full ISDN line. "It came highly recommended," he says, adding that many fellow members of AFTRA, the professional announcers union, spoke highly of the economical, compact new codec. In fact, praise for the RoadRunner came not only from announcers who had bought a unit, Craig says, but also from those who wish they had! What impressed Craig the most about the RoadRunner was how easy it was to install and use. "I ordered it on Monday; it arrived on Wednesday, and I was using it on Thursday," he says. Craig had an existing ISDN line for Internet access, so installing the new unit was quick and easy. "I had it up and running in less than an hour." Craig hadn't planned to use the RoadRunner right away, but a client needed some remote commercial work done on the day he set the unit up. Craig's tight schedule wouldn't permit the necessary travel time, and the client couldn't reschedule. To save the job, Craig decided to put his new RoadRunner to work on the spot. "I entered the settings I needed literally within a few minutes," says Craig. "The keypad was even easier to use than I had expected, and it was easy to make and keep the connections." The two separate headphone monitoring circuits, each with individual Send and Receive level controls, were a big plus. The session went so well that the client had Craig pick up more lines a few days later, again using the RoadRunner. Like so many professionals who use the RoadRunner, Craig is a convert to the ease and convenience of this new user-friendly technology. "I have no doubt it will increase this business," he says, and adds that he now plans to go after more out-of-town jobs. With ISDN service and audio codec technology making remote recording for stations around the country possible, "the freelance voice-over business has exploded in the past year," Craig says. He even wants to explore the possibility of auditioning for this new work from home instead of traveling to the studios of the William Morris Agency, which represents him. Craig wants to set the record straight on one thing: "Owning a RoadRunner is no longer a matter of having a competitive edge. It's a necessity just to keep up." Wendell, we couldn't agree more.
