CDQPrima™ Keeps International Production Company in Control How much faith do you have in your audio codec? When they built their new Western US production facility in Las Vegas, Studio Center Worldwide Audio based their entire business expansion plan around the CDQPrima™ 210 from MUSICAM USA. In the two years since they made this bold move, says John McClain, General Manager, "We more than doubled our business." The Norfolk-based company, which supplies voice-overs for advertising, was already doing "in excess of $2.5M" on the East coast alone when they decided to establish a foothold in the Pacific Time Zone. McClain reports that the Las Vegas studio has become an invaluable resource for Hollywood stars, including Robert Wagner, Louie Anderson, and Wayne Newton, who came in to dub his part as a villain in an upcoming animated Disney feature. Using the CDQPrima codec, Newton’s voice was sent directly to the Disney studios in Los Angeles. He was able to get the dubbing done without having to squeeze a trip to L.A. into his hectic schedule. In addition to expanding into the film industry, the CDQPrima has allowed Studio Center to add international advertising clients. McClain says that the company has just completed spots for Diet Coke in the United Kingdom and for Kellogg’s in South America. One of Studio Center’s voice-over talents recently provided "the industrial reading for an eyeglass manufacturer" in Milan, Italy. "American voices are very popular," adds McClain, especially in Singapore, New Zealand, and Australia. With MUSICAM USA’s audio codec technology, the company can now offer more than 75 voice-over talents on demand from their Las Vegas and Norfolk studios, as well as through their 21 affiliates around the world. The ISDN telephone line needed for the CDQPrima is readily available almost everywhere they work, reports McClain. Just as easy to find is the Prima itself, which is compatible with most audio codecs. MUSICAM USA codecs alone account for more than 15,000 units worldwide. The key to success, says McClain, is control. Studio Center claims to enjoy a unique relationship with its voice-over talent. All talents are exclusive to Studio Center, and most are eager to keep Studio Center abreast of their schedules—"right down to dental appointments." "We can find almost anyone at a moment’s notice for last minute jobs," says McClain. Control of sound quality is also essential, and that’s why Studio Center relies on the CDQPrima, according to McClain. The Prima, with its wide range of data rates and unequalled features, offers more control of data compression for better sound quality. Coordinating so many talents at 7 separate studios and in different time zones, McClain reports that the most convenient and timesaving CDQPrima feature is the Speed Dial systems. "I have all the speed dials set for our Norfolk numbers. I just push two buttons, and it’s off to the races, locked up tight. Running a session with the Prima is a piece of cake," says McClain.
