| RoadWarrior and Suprima have courtside seats for the US Open By Ken Pursley 9/14/07 Broadcasting audio has its challenges when on the road. Over the years, while covering the US Open tennis, in Flushing Meadow New York, I've noticed most of the broadcasters use ISDN for their commentary and co-ordination circuits. Recently, though we seem to be in a transition period and beginning to slowly use IP transmission more and more. This year, for the first time, I used the Roadwarrior and Suprima codecs in both ISDN as well as IP mode. The ISDN portion is used for the main program feed with the IP section as backup. Connecting over IP with the Mpeg Layer 2 format not only gives me the high quality signal that is required for TV, but also saves money by no longer having to use long distance carriers for ISDN connections. Ordering a single DSL line, and uding a router to interface with the codec, allows me also to share the circuit with 3 laptops as well. I was surprised with the reliability of the IP connection. Once I made the connection, the remote codec, locked up, framed, and the connection was stable for the entire event. The web browser-based interface allowed me to monitor and change configurations with ease. I especially liked the receive/transmit status, and packet loss graphs which allowed me to monitor the circuit while streaming. For studio use, the Suprima is the way to go, but when on the road I would recommend using the Roadwarrior because of its built in audio mixer. Either way Musicam has come up with another winner.
